Psalm 91 (Part One)

"He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust." (vv 1-2)

At the end of a stressful day, you may heave a relieved sigh as you insert your key into your front door, shutting the day's troubles out behind you. On the other hand, that act may weigh you down as it simply heralds a different set of problems inside your home. With the comforting words above, the psalmist reveals the hope of every one who trusts in Christ; which is freely available to anyone who faces life's never-ending troubles.

God is a refuge and safe haven.

Our Saviour awaits with arms wide open when we run to Him for safety. We saw from Psalm 90 that God is our home, and Psalm 91 reveals Him as an unfailing Shelter from the storms of life. The psalmist makes the following declaration to anyone within earshot, (possibly including himself) that God ALONE is his refuge. David also paints a glorious picture of this wonderful relationship with our Maker:

"He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams." (Psalm 23:2 NLT)

As we explore today's psalm, one thing becomes clear. As long as you live on earth, you will be exposed to the deadly evils that plague the world (vv 5-7 Amp). However, there is no need to fear, for:

"He will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection." (Ps 91:3-4)

God is the same yesterday, today and forever. When the angel of death plagued the Egyptians, He hid the Israelites under the safety of His blood. When famine ravaged the land of Gerar, Isaac prospered because He trusted in God's promise to provide for him (Gen 26) . In Gen 19, the towns of Sodom and Gomorrah were set to be destroyed, but first, God took Lot under his protection and preserved his family. We also read throughout the book of Judges that God repeatedly rescued the Israelites each time they called on Him for help.

I encourage you to make the same declaration of God today - He is your home, your refuge and place of safety. Read and meditate on the above examples, and begin to see yourself under God's protection.

Take a look at the following lyrics from a song by Alvin Slaughter:

God's gonna do it again, just like He did way back then,
He's still the same as He's always been,
God is God, God's gonna do it again.*

Come under His protection today, and He will keep you safe as He has done for generations of His children throughout the ages.

Dear Lord,

Please open my eyes to see You as my Protector, Redeemer and Refuge. I entrust myself and all that concerns me into Your loving care today.

Amen
